Brazilians account for 85% of the processes for recognizing Italian citizenship by blood right carried out in Italy.
In 2017, 8.252 people recognized their citizenship the right of blood in Italy, of which 7.014 were from Brazil.

The numbers only include requests for recognition of citizenship based on blood rights made in Italy, excluding data relating to processes being processed in the consular network. To recognize citizenship on Italian soil, it is necessary to establish residence in the country during the processing of the application, which can take a few months.
The data comes from the Italian Ministry of the Interior and was transmitted by the National Statistics Institute (Istat), and refer to the last year with consolidated figures available.
However, of the 7.014 citizenships recognized for Italian-Brazilians, almost two thousand were canceled due to false residency, corruption and other irregularities. Dozens of Brazilians and Italian officers were arrested.
In the city of Ospedaletto Lodigiano, in the Province of Lodi, northern Italy, alone, 1.188 Brazilians had their Italian citizenship applications cancelled.
Brazilians fall to third place in naturalization cases
Still according to Istat data, in 2017 Italy processed 146.605 citizenship applications through naturalization – based on residency, marriage, or other reasons.
The champions were the Albanians with 27.112 citizenships (18,5%) and the Moroccans with 22.645 (15,4%).
When taking into account all types of citizenship, Brazilians fall to third place in the ranking, with 9.936 applications (6,8%).
Combining applications for naturalization and recognition the right of blood (by right of blood), Brazil now has 16.950 new Italian citizens.
