Former star takes over after the elimination of “Vecchia Signora” in the round of 16 of the Champions League
Andrea Pirlo, world champion as a player for Italy in 2006, was announced this Saturday as the new coach of Juventus, just hours after the announcement of Maurizio Sarri's resignation.
Pirlo, 41 years old, who as a player wore the Juve shirt for four seasons (2011-2015), has no experience as a coach.
Just ten days ago, he had been appointed coach of the U23 team's Turin.
The choice of the former star comes less than 24 hours after the painful elimination of “Old lady” against Lyon, in the round of 16 Champions League.
“During his four seasons in Juventus’ midfield, Pirlo won four Scudetti (titles of Italian Serie A), one World Cup and two Super Cups. Today begins a new chapter of his career in the world of football: from Maestro to Mister,” Juventus wrote in its statement.
“Il Mister” is the way Italians refer to football coaches, whatever the level or age group.
“From today onwards, it will be for the young people”Il Mister“because the club decided to entrust him with the technical command of the main team, after having already chosen him for Juventus U23,” said the Piedmontese club.
“The decision is taken with the conviction that Pirlo has everything it takes to lead, from his debut in charge, an experienced and talented team, to achieve new successes,” explained the team “black and white".
Juventus has won nine consecutive titles in the Italian championship. But winning the “Scudetto” this season was not enough for Maurizio Sarri to continue, after the great disappointment of the elimination against Lyon.
Sarri lasted just one season in charge, after replacing Massimiliano Allegri, who had spent five years as the team's coach.
The European title is Juventus' greatest obsession, having not won it since 1996. In 2018, the Italian club signed the star Cristiano Ronaldo, five-time winner of the Champions League, but who failed to take the Turinenses to the Champions League title in his first two seasons in Italy.
