The region where the former terrorist is imprisoned is one of the least affected by the pandemic

O former terrorist Cesare Battisti, who is serving a life sentence in a penitentiary in Sardinia, southern Italy, has appealed to be released from prison over fears of contracting the new coronavirus.

His lawyer, Davide Steccanella, said the request was filed throughout the week.

“He fears contagion. Furthermore, for a year and a half he has been the only one in maximum security isolation in Oristano, and hasn’t seen his family since then,” he said.

It remains to be remembered that Sardinia is one of the regions with a low rate of Covid-19 contagion.

In data presented by the Italian civil defense this Friday (07), the large Italian island has recorded only 1.324 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, while in Lombardy, for example, the most affected region in Italy, the number is 80.723.

Lombardy has a population of 10,06 million; Sardinia totals 1,64 million.
