Panic may have been caused by pepper spray
At least five teenagers and a woman died and dozens of people were injured, in the early hours of today (8), due to a disturbance at the “Lanterna Azzurra” nightclub, in the city of Corinaldo, in the province of Ancona (Italy), during the show of a famous Italian rapper, allegedly because, according to firefighters, someone fired pepper spray.
The dead are three girls and two boys, between 14 and 16 years old, and a mother, approximately 40 years old, who accompanied her daughter to the Italian Sfera Ebbasta concert, Ancona police chief Oreste Capocasa confirmed to the Italian public broadcaster. “Rai News”.
Capocasa explained that 13 injured people are in very serious condition, and that another 60 people were admitted to hospitals in the province.
Some witnesses said they started running after getting scared after smelling an acidic smell and went to the nightclub's emergency doors, which were closed.
However, the police officer stated that everything happened outside the nightclub, when young people gathered, with some barriers being broken and falling into the void, as the establishment is located in an elevated region.
Some of the deaths occurred when other people fell on top of them, while firefighters confirmed there were no victims inside the club.
The commotion happened before the start of the show, when some people who were still entering the venue said that many of the young people were leaving the club with breathing problems and were coughing.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals and the most seriously injured went to Ancona, in the central Marche region.
According to a message on Twitter from the Fire Department, the rush took place before 1 am (local time) and in the images released by the corporation, dozens of young people appear being treated on a road and some of them taken away on stretchers.
Sfera Ebbasta is one of the most famous rappers in Italy and considered an idol among teenagers.
