Italian Consulate in SP recognized 4 thousand citizenships in 2016

Applicants are swapping long queues at consulates for faster processes in Italy

According to the consulate itself, there are 202.832 Italian citizens registered in SP

The Italian Consulate General in São Paulo processed approximately 4 citizenship applications in 2016, an average of 15 per day, a year in which there was a change in the process for obtaining dual nationality. According to the consulate's figures, around 8 applications were processed in Italy during the same period.

The balance was released by the diplomatic representation of the European country this Friday (30) and also showed that there are 202.832 resident Italian citizens registered at the Consulate, an increase of 12 thousand compared to 2015. The number of people in the queue was not informed. wait for the process.

In 2016, the process for obtaining dual nationality became less bureaucratic, with the entry into force of the Hague Convention Apostille in Brazil. The measure eliminates the validation and legalization phase at foreign diplomatic representations of documents required to obtain citizenship – such as birth and marriage certificates.

Furthermore, it benefits commercial, legal and educational transactions, consolidating in a single booklet all the information necessary to validate a document in another nation that is part of the pact, including Italy. This apostille is a type of certificate issued in the country of origin of the interested individual or legal entity and which guarantees the authenticity of the document in question.

This makes the whole process a little less bureaucratic, but there has been no change in Italy's criteria for granting nationality to Brazilians. Everything else about the process remains exactly the same.
