Deputy asked his team study the topic and will ask the Ministry of Internal Affairs for an explanation
Italian-Brazilian congressman Fasto Longo, from the Democratic Party, will ask the Ministry of the Interior for an explanation this week on the issue of residency for citizenship processes in Italy. He has appointed his team to “study the issue with due attention.”
On Tuesday (26), seven Brazilians were arrested, accused mainly of ideological falsehood for having carried out processes with illegal residences, according to the police.
Having a residence in Italy is one of the requirements for those entitled to Italian citizenship to apply for recognition on Italian soil. However, the Italian Public Prosecutor's Office understands that a short period in the country – 90 days, for example – does not constitute habitual residence, meaning residence where the applicant establishes themselves permanently.
The agency has already requested the cancellation of the process for approximately 800 Brazilians, who could have their Italian citizenship revoked.
The concern is the case becomes jurisprudence for tens of thousands of processes already carried out in Italy in recent years. “Certainly this Monday I will file a request for information, via written question, to the Ministry”, said the parliamentarian, this Sunday (31).
Since there is no pre-established timeframe or minimum time in the circulars regulating the Italian citizenship process, the issue is unclear to Italian municipal officials, police, and legal experts.
Operation “Super Santos”, launched this week, carried out telephone interceptions, including in Portuguese, raids at airports and places of arrival, hundreds of investigations in the properties where Brazilians were staying, which revealed thousands of false processes for recognition of citizenship. The investigation lasted approximately 1 year.
