The number of people with dual citizenship in Switzerland is growing; Italian leads

The number of people with dual citizenship in Switzerland has increased steadily in recent years. According to the latest research, almost one in five Swiss citizens has a second nationality.

According to the portal's publication Swissinfo, in 2021, 19% of the Swiss permanent resident population aged 15 and over had dual Swiss and foreign citizenship.

Compared to 2010, the proportion of people with dual passports increased by more than 5 percentage points. according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). 

According to the agency, 65% obtained Swiss nationality through naturalization, while 35% received it by birth.

According to the FSO, almost one in four binational citizens has Swiss and Italian citizenship. 

The dual nationality of Switzerland and France is in second place with 11% of the total, followed by the Swiss-German combination with 9%.
