An Italian drone capable of carrying hundreds of kilos of goods: it is the project of Leonardo, a technology company in the areas of defense, aerospace, security, automation, transport and energy.
called “Sumeri: Si Slapa!”, the equipment can be operated remotely for up to 50 km using an Extended Visual Line of Site control system.
The demonstration, authorized by ENAC (Italian Civil Aviation Authority), was carried out at city of Turin, and is the next step towards a new air logistics model for medium-range routes.
The project is the first in Italy – and one of the first in the world – in which a remote piloting system with these characteristics flies in an urban environment.
Italian drone to make the country more functional
“This initiative is an expression of Leonardo’s vision to make cities more functional, sustainable and environmentally friendly,” said Laurent Sissmann, senior vice president of unmanned systems at Leonardo.
The benefits to citizens of such services in the future will include faster deliveries, lower costs and, most importantly, reduced pollution due to electric drone propulsion systems.
“The ability to transport goods via drone in urban areas is an important part of the urban development of air mobility in Italy. It is a model that we hope to be able to export throughout Europe", highlights Alessio Quaranta, General Manager from ENAC.
