Scandal reveals illegal visa trade in Italian consulates

Scandal involving corrupt employees of Italian embassies and consulates reveals illegal visa trade.

A serious scandal has come to light in Italy involving corrupt officials at Italian embassies and consulates in different parts of the world. According to the complaint filed by Andrea Di Giuseppe, a member of the FDI (Brothers of Italy) party, elected in the North and Central America region, these officials were allegedly involved in a scheme of illegal international trade in work and tourist visas.

The deputy, who now faces threats, especially from the Calabrian mafia, revealed to the Secolo d'Italia website that at least 10 embassies and consulates are involved in this corruption scheme, including representations from South America. "They came to 'see' me both in Miami and in Rome, as well as a series of anonymous phone calls that continue to arrive," reported the Italian deputy.

According to Di Giuseppe, these practices occur in different parts of the world, mainly in regions where desperate people do not have the possibility of physically and legally reaching Italy. He describes these corrupt officials as the new drug dealers.

“It is a very old and very profitable phenomenon,” said the parliamentarian.

As stated in the complaint made to the Rome Financial Guard, including evidence, Italian officials were selling work visas for 15.000 euros (around R$80) and charging 6.000 euros (R$32) for tourist visas for citizens of countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Philippines and other nations Asians.

Faced with this situation, the deputy highlights the seriousness of the involvement of officials representing Italian embassies and consulates: the corrupt conduct of some tarnishes the country's reputation.
