A study published this week by the University of Turin suggests that vitamin D can be a great ally in preventing cases of Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. According to professors Giancarlo Isaia and Enzo Medico, specialists in geriatrics and histology (the study of tissues) respectively, and responsible for the document, a nutrient deficiency was noted among Italian patients diagnosed positive for the disease.
According to the study, there is several scientific evidence of the effects of vitamin D in preventing infectious conditions and diseases that can reduce life expectancy in the elderly. Therefore, the researchers consider it “probable” that the nutrient could provide greater resistance to Covid-19 infection.
The document points out that Vitamin D compensation can be achieved mainly with adequate exposure to sunlight and the consumption of foods rich in vitamin D such as fish and eggs. The intake of pharmaceutical supplementation based on vitamin D, however, should be restricted to those who have received medical advice for its use.
