The Italian capital empties out in the summer, but maintains its program: free sessions to combat the heat, museums and monuments with extended hours.

Rome empties out in August, but maintains a schedule of activities for those who remain in the city during the summer. Free cinema, museum exhibitions and... night visits to the Colosseum and the Pantheon are among the options.

The Italian city government and government have announced initiatives to address the heat wave expected this month, a period when some businesses close for the holidays and many residents leave the capital.

Cinema against the heat

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri announced a program that transforms 11 movie theaters into air-conditioned havens, with free screenings twice a day until August 4th. Films start between 13 PM and 14:45 PM and between 18:30 PM and 18:45 PM.

Outdoor sessions continue throughout the month at various locations around the city. Ettore Scola theatreThe Villa Borghese offers free film screenings in their original language with Italian subtitles. The venue is pet-friendly and publishes its schedule weekly.

Those who prefer to watch films in Italian can find screenings for 5 euros at Cinevillage, until September, at four locations: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Villa Lazzaroni, Villa Bonelli and Parco Marconi, sometimes with guest presenters introducing the films.

Colosseum and Pantheon at night

The Colosseum opens from 19:45 PM to 23:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and the Pantheon It operates every day except Thursdays, from 19 pm to 23 pm. This measure is part of an initiative by the Italian Ministries of Culture and Tourism.

The Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, stated that the nighttime openings offer "the chance to experience, in a evocative atmosphere, two universal testimonies of history and human ingenuity," in a statement reproduced by the RomaToday website.

Museums and parks

The Capitoline Museums are exhibiting paintings by Diego Rivera, the Museum of Rome is dedicating a show to the filmmaker Ettore Scola, and... Museum of Rome in Trastevere It features photographs of New York throughout the decades. Some exhibits are free for residents and MIC card holders.

At night, parks like Schuster, Appio, and Caracalla, as well as the Testaccio Estate circuit, host concerts, game nights, and DJ sets with free admission and food and drinks for sale on site.

Many restaurants and bars close for the "ferie" (summer vacation), in Romethroughout the month. The recommendation is to confirm opening hours online or by phone before leaving home.

What is a MIC card?
The Rome city hall cultural card provides unlimited access to municipal museums for one year. It is available to residents and students of the city and guarantees free or discounted admission to various exhibitions, including part of the August program.
