According to the newspaper Il Messaggero, the British Home Office revoked the permanent residency of a 33-year-old Italian engineer residing in London since 2018, claiming an error in granting him status under the EU settlement program. The government requires him to present proof of Italian citizenship prior to December 31, 2020, the Brexit deadline. The man, born in Brazil with dual Italian citizenship, had attached a certificate from the Italian consulate to his application, but the authorities considered the evidence insufficient. His wife, of Brazilian origin, also lost her right to remain in the country.
This case is not isolated: more than 100 people have been informed by the ministry of similar errors in the granting of their resident status.
