According to Sky TG24, Spain has activated temporary border controls for passengers arriving from Italy in response to restrictions imposed by Rome following the mass influx of migrants to Ceuta. The checks, which include identity verification at ports and airports, are in effect until September 7th and are already in place. Spanish police sources said the controls target passengers suspected of having boarded flights in Italy from outside the European Union.
The confrontation between Madrid and Rome is now open. Pedro Sánchez's government had threatened retaliation if Italy did not lift its controls by Sunday.
