According to the RaiNews portal, Italian gymnast Manila Esposito responded to criticism she received on social media about her physical appearance after winning three medals at the European Championships in Zagreb. She won gold in the floor exercise and silver in the balance beam and team competition. In an interview with the ANSA news agency, she said that she did not respond to the authors of the messages via private message, but "on the field." According to the athlete, it is thanks to her physique that she achieves results.
Esposito turns 20 on November 2nd and has already won 13 European medals in her career. She is one of the leading gymnasts in Europe and is a member of the Italian police force, in addition to having competed in the Olympic Games. Artistic gymnastics is one of the sports with the greatest Olympic tradition in Italy, with recent podium finishes in continental competitions.
The gymnast stated that more sensitive athletes could be hurt by this type of comment and criticized those who offend anonymously. The president of the Italian Gymnastics Federation, Andrea Facci, said he waited until the end of the European Championships to speak out, so as not to distract the athletes. Facci demanded ways to contain the so-called "keyboard lions," who, according to him, are never held accountable for their actions.
