According to Il Sole 24 Ore, Spain has reinstated border controls at ports and airports with direct links to Italy until September 7th, in retaliation for the measure adopted by the Meloni government on July 31st, following the Ceuta migration crisis. For Italian and Spanish citizens, entry requirements remain unchanged: valid passports or identity cards are still mandatory. In practice, however, the president of Fiavet, Gian Mario Pileri, warned that "tens of thousands of people will face waits of one hour, one and a half hours" before crossing the border.

The controls focus on non-EU citizens, but affect all passengers.
