According to Sky TG24, Italy is facing a period of instability with violent storms and intense electrical activity in the North and, to a lesser extent, in the Center, between August 20th and 21st. Civil Protection has issued an orange alert for parts of Lombardy and a yellow alert for seven other regions in the North and for Tuscany. The heaviest rainfall is expected near the Alps, Pre-Alps, Triveneto, and in the stretch between Liguria, Levante, and Upper Tuscany. In the South, sunny and warm days are expected again.
The phenomenon brings an end to weeks of intense, stifling heat. An Atlantic disturbance coming from central Europe will hit northern Italy between the night of August 19th and the 20th, then moving towards the center. The temperature contrast may generate hail with stones up to 5 to 6 centimeters in size, wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h, and concentrated rainfall, with a risk of flooding.
In Milan, an orange alert for the risk of severe storms at the city's hydroelectric hub is in effect from 6:00 AM (Italian time), with the peak phase expected in the afternoon and evening, and gusts that could reach 110 km/h. The City Hall has closed parks and indoor activities, including the Planetarium and libraries. Cemeteries and spas are open until 2:00 PM.
