According to the RaiNews portal, 21-year-old Italian Nicola Maggiotto is in intensive care and in an induced coma at a hospital in Barcelona, Spain, due to injuries sustained in an attack. The young man, from Asolo, in the province of Treviso, was traveling with a group of eight other friends of the same age. His father, Daniele Maggiotto, told ANSA that his son has been diagnosed with brain injuries and that the prognosis is guarded.
According to the reconstruction made by friends, the attack occurred shortly after 22 pm (Italian time) outside a nightclub. About twelve people, also young and Spanish-speaking, reportedly approached. Two Italians who moved away from the group were attacked, and Maggiotto received a violent blow to the back of the neck, losing consciousness. The attackers allegedly started a fight with the other Italians who came to help and fled before the police arrived. Nothing was taken from the victims, ruling out robbery as a motive.
The Italian consulate general in Barcelona has been providing assistance to the two injured individuals since the initial report, according to sources from the Farnesina, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The other young man suffered a facial bone injury, received stitches, and was released hours later. The family filed a complaint, and Spanish authorities have opened an investigation. The sequence of events is not yet fully clear.
