According to the RaiNews portal, the investigating judge in Rome rejected the request to replace Valter Lavitola's pre-trial detention with house arrest. The magistrate considered that the risk of contamination of evidence and the danger of flight persist, and assessed that the suspect's statements were not entirely complete. The Prosecutor's Office had issued an opinion against his release. The defense, led by lawyer Sergio Cola, will appeal to the Court of Review.
Lavitola is being investigated for the attack against Sigfrido Ranucci, presenter of the news program Report on Italian public television. In an interrogation lasting more than five hours, he allegedly told the judge that he commissioned the perpetrators to carry out an action with "various methods," not an explosive device, but four or five pistol shots against the wall of the journalist's house in Pomezia, near Rome. After the explosion, he reportedly did not object, considering the act to have demonstrative value.
The Rome District Anti-Mafia Directorate hypothesizes that the attack was orchestrated on Ranucci's behalf, to increase his public profile. Investigators believe the journalist was unaware of any such plan. He remains a victim and may be questioned again by the Prosecutor's Office after the analysis of Lavitola's cell phone and computer.
