According to the RaiNews portal, a group of neo-Nazis wearing black skull t-shirts attempted to force their way into a hotel in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on Sunday, August 2nd, where approximately 200 Jewish students aged 15 and 16 from various European countries were staying, including members of the Jewish communities of Rome and Milan. The attackers shouted “Sieg Heil!” and performed the Roman salute. The police went to the scene, but the group returned in greater numbers and blocked the entrances again.
Gabriel, 16, a resident of Milan, told Adnkronos that the young people were in their rooms on the fourth floor and that their chaperones asked them to stay away from the windows and not go outside. He said some of their friends started crying. The students were escorted by police to the airport. A video recorded the incident, according to the report.
The president of the Jewish Community of Rome, Victor Fadlun, condemned the incident and stated that young Jewish people are not free to travel around Europe without exposure to violence and verbal aggression from anti-Semites. He called on Bulgarian authorities to clarify the case and identify and prosecute those responsible. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union.
