According to the RaiNews portal, the average sea surface temperature between 60 degrees south and 60 degrees north reached 20,96 degrees in July 2026, surpassing the previous record of 20,89 degrees, registered in July 2023. The data comes from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Exceptionally high temperatures were observed in the tropical Pacific, where El Niño conditions are expected to intensify in the coming months, according to Copernicus.

Overall, July 2026 was the second warmest July on record, virtually tied with July 2024 and behind only 2023. The average air temperature was 1,47 degrees above the pre-industrial average.
