According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, investigators have located a van that may have been used by the perpetrators of the theft of Antonello da Messina's paintings to flee after the crime. The vehicle was found on the outskirts of the city, in an area not monitored by cameras. The connection between the vehicle and the theft is still a hypothesis under investigation and not a confirmed fact by the authorities.
The absence of cameras at the location where the van was found hinders the police investigation because it eliminates the recording of images that usually indicate times, routes, and the number of people involved. Therefore, the investigation relies on other elements, such as traces left in the vehicle itself. So far, there is no public indication of arrests or recovery of the stolen artwork.
Antonello da Messina is one of the great names in 15th-century Italian painting, known for his highly precise portraits and for bringing the art of the peninsula closer to Flemish techniques. His works are rare and among the most valued in the Italian artistic heritage, which gives dimension to the theft and explains the country's attention to the case.
