According to the RaiNews portal, the Italian Civil Protection agency published a guide on its website with advice on how to reduce the risk of being struck by lightning, following the deaths of two people on August 17. The agency recommends seeking immediate shelter in a building or, if that is not possible, inside a car with the windows closed and the antenna lowered. Among the most common mistakes are taking shelter under trees and staying near water or gates.

The document clarifies that lightning doesn't only strike during heavy rain and can hit locations several kilometers away from the disturbance. If there are only flashes of light, the storm may still be far away; if the thunder is audible, it's a few kilometers away. Metal doesn't attract lightning, so watches and keys don't pose a danger, but large metal structures, such as fences and railings, conduct the current to anyone in contact with them.

The mountains are the most dangerous places, along with wide, exposed areas such as open fields, especially those with water nearby. In open spaces, the guide advises staying away from poles and trees, descending from a low altitude, avoiding ridges, ropes, and metal ladders, and maintaining at least 10 meters of distance between people. On the beach, it is necessary to leave umbrellas and fishing rods behind and remain standing together, without lying down. At home, unplug appliances and stay away from closed doors and windows.
