According to Sky TG24, Italian Sara Curtis won the gold medal in the 50m backstroke at the European Swimming Championships in Paris, with a new absolute world record of 26.56 seconds. In about 24 hours, the 19-year-old swimmer broke two world records: she clocked 26.63 seconds in the semi-final and improved her time by seven hundredths of a second in the final. The silver medal went to Frenchwoman Mary-Ambre Moluh (27.06 seconds) and the bronze to Briton Lauren Cox (27.15 seconds). Dutch swimmer Marrit Steenbergen finished fourth, one hundredth of a second from the podium.
Curtis was born in Savigliano, Piedmont, and represents the Italian Army. She trains at Virginia University with Todd DeSorbo and, when in Italy, with Thomas Maggiora. In less than two months, she improved by half a second: on June 26th she set the European record with 27.07 seconds. She also holds the national records for the 50m freestyle (24.09 seconds), the 100m freestyle (52.69 seconds, and 51.26 seconds in short course) and the 50m backstroke in short course.
“It was difficult to manage yesterday’s emotions and I had trouble sleeping,” said the athlete. Paolo Barelli, president of the Italian Swimming Federation, praised her ability to handle the pressure. Christian Mantegazza finished sixth in the 200m breaststroke final. Carlos D'Ambrosio advanced to the 200m freestyle final and Thomas Ceccon to the 50m backstroke final.
