The Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi, made an official visit to the city of Genoa this Wednesday (9) and once again paid homage to the victims of the tragedy in the collapse of the Morandi Bridge, which took place in 2018, and highlights that the place is a “model” for the country.
“The recent history of Genoa and the courage of the Genoese show us how to start over after a tragedy. I think about what happened after the Morandi Bridge fell. I want to express once again the closeness of the government and my staff to the families of the 43 victims, the injured, their loved ones. Today, as four years ago, their pain is our pain,” said Draghi.
The prime minister thanked the “commissariat structure”, established after the incident, “the local authorities, Senator Renzo Piano and everyone involved” in the reconstruction. An example of collaboration, speed and concreteness that became a model.”
During his long stay in the city, Draghi also stated that he saw “a city that I didn’t know”, as his other visits were always “very quick”.
Furthermore, he confirmed that what he observed in Genova It also serves all the reconstruction that will need to be done in Italy to deal with the post-pandemic recovery of Covid-19 as well as other far-reaching problems, such as climate change.
“My wish is that the same spirit of rebirth that we see in Genoa today may continue to exist throughout Italy in the crucial years ahead. Growing the port area here means investing in the potential of this city, in our country's ability to be a protagonist in the Mediterranean and in the world. In addition, it is able to create jobs and new opportunities for young people and show that interventions of this size can be carried out with respect for the environment and go hand in hand with improving services for citizens”, he added.
