Flames hit railway station equipment in Florence
A series of arson attacks at Florence's Rovezzano train station caused chaos in rail transport in Italy on Monday (22).
The flames started at dawn and hit equipment responsible for managing train circulation, but have now been controlled. The incident, however, still causes delays on conventional and high-speed lines.
The police suspect the action of anarchists, due to a trial against those accused of involvement in the bomb attack against a bookstore linked to the neo-fascist group CasaPound, on January 1, 2017, whose sentence is scheduled for this Monday.
At the time, a police officer lost his right eye and had his left hand amputated. Furthermore, the fires occur just hours before a visit by Italy's Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, to Florence.
High-speed lines between the Tuscan capital and the country's main cities experienced delays of up to four hours, and at least 42 trips were cancelled. “Due to the damage, there is a strong reduction in the capacity of the railway infrastructure”, says a note from the state company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI).
