Italy's inflation accelerates in January, preliminary data shows

Inflation in Italy in January 2025 rose 0,6% compared to December 2024 and 1,5% compared to the same period last year, according to preliminary data released this Monday (3) by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat).

If confirmed, the result marks an acceleration in the National Consumer Price Index for the Community (NIC), which had shown an annualized increase of 1,3% in December.

According to Istat, this is the result of the exhaustion of deflationary impulses in energy prices (from -2,8% in December to -0,7% in January), in addition to a strong acceleration in regulated energy goods, such as electricity and gas tariffs (from +12,7% to +27,8%).

Manufactured food, which rose 2% in January compared to the same month in 2024 (compared to 1,7% in December), also contributed to the rise in inflation at the beginning of 2025.
