Italy to donate 15 million doses of vaccines anti covid for poor countries, which have faced difficulties in obtaining immunizations against the new coronavirus.
The announcement was made by the Prime Minister Mario Draghi during a speech at Câmara dos Deputados last Wednesday (23).
“Improving access to vaccines in the poorest countries is not only an ethical issue, but also a health priority. Italy will do its part and provide 15 million doses,” she declared.
With the pandemic under control, the country has already at least partially vaccinated more than half of the population, and almost 30% of people have already taken two doses of the Oxford, Moderna or Pfizer or a single dose of Janssen and completed the immunization cycle.
Draghi did not announce which product will be destined for poor countries, but the The Italian government has already significantly limited the use of the AstraZeneca/Oxford formula, which is currently only recommended for people over 60 years of age. The prime minister also did not say which nations will receive the donations.
Recently, the G7, of which Italy is part, committed to donating 1 billion doses of anti-Covid vaccines, but considering until the end of 2022. According to the portal Our World in Data, the world already has 2,8 billion vaccines administered, but only 46,8 million in Africa (1,7% of the total), which has 15% of the global population.
