Italy celebrates this Tuesday (25) the poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), author of “The Divine Comedy” and “father” of the Italian language.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani posted a video on X where he quotes the poet: “Fatti non fummo per viver come bruti, ma per seguir virtute e canoscenza” (“We were not made to live like brutes, but to follow virtue and knowledge”, in free translation).
“This is the basis of our civilization. Let us remember that Dante was the first great Europeanist,” Tajani added in his tribute to “Dantedì” (“Dante’s Day”).
The opinion is shared by the president of the Casa de Dante museum in Florence, the genius's birthplace, Cristina Manetti.
“In Dante we already find an idea of Europe and of a common European thought”, said Manetti, linking the date with the current debate on European unity in the face of so many geopolitical challenges.
Dante Alighieri is considered one of the greatest humanist writers in Italy. Every March 25, Italians celebrate “Dandedì”, the day on which the poet’s journey begins in “The Divine Comedy”, his masterpiece. (ANSA)
