The Italian Embassy defended Italian in the Brazilian Congress, safeguarding the possibility of the language being studied as a second language in secondary education and thus giving the possibility to more than 30 million descendants of the “Belpaese” to maintain a close link with their origins.
According to the Italian ambassador to Brazil, Alessandro Cortese, this is an important result and of symbolic value, “especially in the 150th year of Italian immigration” in the South American country.
“Having the opportunity to study the language linked to one’s own roots is fundamental to keeping cultural identity alive”, observes the diplomat.
The embassies of France (guided by its assertive linguistic policy), Germany and Japan, the latter also linked to Brazil by large migrant communities, also pressured the Brazilian Congress to leave the door open to the plurality of languages.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed: citizenship is born with the person.

The measure is considered a success given the risk – which arose during the discussion in the Senate – that the teaching of a second language in secondary education would have to be limited only to Spanish – the second most studied language in Brazil. (HANDLE)
