Spain led the choices
For the first time, Italy is the preferred choice among more than 1.200 students at the University of Porto (UP) who will do Erasmus next academic year, replacing Spain, which was leading the choices.
Erasmus Mundus is an international cooperation program, created in 2004 and financed by the European Commission, which allows the mobility of students in higher education. Thanks to scholarships, students and researchers from all over the world can undertake an exchange or even complete their training at some of the best European universities.
“There is a small change in the chosen countries. The order has been Spain, Italy, Brazil, Poland and Germany, but this year there is a small inversion, because Italy has around 40 more students than Spain. We have not yet studied the phenomenon, but we will want to know if it is purely one-off or if it is to continue”, highlighted vice-rector Maria de Lurdes Correia Fernandes
Miguel Veloso, 22 years old, who is in his 4th year of Medicine, is one of the students who, to study in the next semester, chose Italy among the 43 countries with which UP has a protocol and revealed that “the culture, the language and “feedback” from colleagues weighed in on the candidacy process. “I want to take advantage of the experience, because it will allow me to see how things work in Italy and to be able to make choices for my future, especially as I think about working abroad. It’s a country that works very differently from Portugal and in terms of basic health care, which is my area, too,” he said. Among the chosen countries, in addition to Italy, with 224 students, Spain, with 168, Poland, with 100, Brazil, with 92, and Germany, with 84 students choosing the destination to carry out the experience, stand out.
