These groups of tourists, before the Covid-19 pandemic, together represented 42% of total foreign arrivals in Italy and 50% of the presence and expenditure made by tourists in the country.
The survey also inquired about the reasons for the choice, and the majority responded that it is because they consider the country "welcoming," "interesting," and "safe." The preferred cities are Rome, Florence, Venice, and... Pisa, but the maritime destinations of Sicily and the Amalfi Coast and the lakes of Como and Garda also appear.
Among those who did not choose Italy as one of the destinations for a trip to Europe, the most cited motivations were the desire to visit the country in the future or because they had already made a trip in the past. Among the youngest, aged 18 to 34, the most cited reason is the high cost. (HANDLE).
