Country plans to start immunization in January 2021

Italy's Health Minister Roberto Speranza said on Wednesday (2) that the government has already secured the purchase of more than 200 million doses of vaccines against the new coronavirus, which is enough to immunize the entire population of the country and also guarantee a safety reserve.

In a Senate hearing, Speranza, from the center-left, stated that the country had ordered 202.573.000 doses from the six manufacturers with contracts signed with the European Union:

As the Italian population is around 60,4 million people, the country would still have a surplus to immunize another 67,8 million individuals, taking into account that 53,84 million units of a single-dose vaccine were ordered ( Janssen) and 148,733 million units of double-dose vaccines.

“We don’t want to run the slightest risk of not being able to have an authorized vaccine before other [countries]”, declared Speranza.

Plano for vaccines in Italy

Vaccination against the new coronavirus in Italy will be free and will begin in January, with the arrival of the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine, which should be the first approved by the European Union.
