Illegal Italian citizenship scheme took place within the Ministry of the Interior
Authorities in Rome dismantled on Monday (20) a criminal organization that operated in the process of obtaining Italian citizenship. Six people were arrested on a precautionary basis and 19 were targeted by search and seizure warrants issued by the Rome Court.
According to the investigations, carried out by the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Rome and the Postal Police Service, the criminal organization handed over Italian citizenships to foreigners, mainly of Egyptian origin, who did not have the right to recognition.
One of the key players in the scheme was an employee of the Department of Civil Liberties and Immigration of the Italian Ministry of the Interior, who was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison for her involvement in the scheme.
The group used the Ministry of the Interior's "Sicitt" computer system to produce Italian citizenship documents, which were even granted to people with pending legal cases and convictions, or who did not reside in Italy and could not provide proof of income.
The employee used Department manager passwords to access the system, correct “flaws” in citizenship applications and, thus, authorize the documents. The group charged from one thousand euros for the process.
At the request of the Italian Ministry of the Interior, President Sergio Mattarella signed the first decrees to revoke the granting of Italian citizenship to foreigners who obtained it illegally.
