After a similar distinction given to pizza, the country has already submitted its candidacy to UNESCO. Confirmation should arrive in 2020
“With this project we are trying to reclaim and recover the Italian identity of espresso. This is because espresso coffee originated from the creativity of Italians”, explains Iaria Danesi, from the Consortium for the Safeguard of Traditional Italian Espresso Coffee, to “Euronews”. “Espresso coffee differs from other types of drinks available around the world, as it is the only one to have this typical foam on top”, she continues.
For now, it is not yet known when confirmation from UNESCO may appear, but it will certainly be during this year. Three years ago, the organization considered the art of Neapolitan pizza chefs to be Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The announcement was made in December 2017.
