Italy will rebuild the Colosseum in Rome

The Italian government published the tender notice for the reconstruction of the Colosseum in Rome.

The new arena will allow events to be held in the old amphitheater.

O project cost is estimated at 18,5 million euros, and works should begin “by the end of 2021”, according to the Ministry of Cultural Goods.

“It will be a major technological intervention that will offer visitors the possibility of contemplating the beauty of the Coliseum from the center of the arena,” said minister Dario Franceschini.

Rome's Coliseum named the most popular attraction in the world

The deadline for submitting proposals ends on February 1st of next year.

According to the government, the project will not be “invasive”, that is, should not modify the characteristics of the ancient Roman amphitheater, which opened in 80 AD and used to host gladiatorial battles and games to entertain the common people.

The reconstruction, according to the Ministry of Cultural Assets, “will allow the public to fully understand the function of this icon of the ancient world, including through high-level cultural events.”

The new arena will even have mechanisms inspired by the ancient structures that made the connection between the stage and the underground of the Coliseum.

In 2015, when the idea was launched, Franceschini had said that reconstruction would require at least five years, but now the government has not given a deadline for completion. (Handle).
