The Italian press accuses around 2 thousand politicians who allegedly received government aid
Um net salary of €13 thousand per month (R$83 thousand). The large figure does not seem to be enough for some Italian deputies.
The revelation that five deputies received Covid-19 emergency aid of €600 per month (R$3.800) scandalized Italy this Monday (10).
The information published by the Italian newspaper “La Reppublica” on Sunday provoked anger among the population.
The deputies who unduly received a benefit that targeted poor families are linked to the party League (far right), at the Five Star Movement (in power) and the party Living Italy (party dissident Democrata).
The Italian press also accuses around 2.000 political leaders, including mayors and community or regional councilors, would also have received government aid.
Aid of €600 in March and April, and €1.000 in May, was intended to help informal workers or those on temporary contracts who saw their income fall due to the pandemic. The fraud was discovered by a government control body.
Some leaders are already joining in with voters and calling for the resignation of the politicians involved.
"It's shameful, really indecent“, reacted Italian Chancellor Luigi di Maio (Five Star Movement) on social media. “They must apologize to the Italians, return the aid and resign.”
“Regardless of who they are, must be suspended immediately“, said the head of the League, Matteo Salvini, according to the Agi news agency.
So far, the names of the deputies have not been released.
The scandal comes weeks before the referendum that will decide the reduction of the Italian parliament. The project intends to eliminate the seats of 345 parliamentarians from the current 945.
The referendum takes place on September 20th and 21st.
