Italian citizenship by descent will be discussed this Thursday, the 29th, at 14 PM. (Rome time)The meeting will take place in the Cenacolo Hall of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome. The meeting will address the impacts of the new... Decree-Law No. 36/2025 and recent court decisions on the subject.
The discussion revolves around the principle of jus sanguinis (Right of blood), the basis for the recognition of Italian citizenship for millions of descendants. The legislative changes approved by Parliament this year altered rules that had been in effect for decades and affect even processes that have already been completed.
Furthermore, on 24 June, the Italian Constitutional Court will assess whether the current rules on the transmission of citizenship are compatible with the Constitution. At the European level, a recent decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union has reignited the debate on the relationship between national citizenship and European citizenship.
Promoted by the association Natitaliani, the event "Italian citizenship iure sanguinis regarding constitutional rights, eurounitary rights and legislative interventions" (Italian citizenship by descent: between constitutional law, European Union law, and legislative interventions, in free translation) will bring together experts to discuss the context and legal consequences of the recent changes.
The panel will feature professors Roberta Calvano (La Sapienza University), Alfonso Celotto (Roma Tre University), Nicola Brutti (University of Padua), Giovanni Bonato (University of Paris Nanterre), Michele Carducci (University of Salento) and Giacomo Di Federico (University of Bologna). The moderator will be Claudia Antonini, vice-president of Natitaliani.
The event will also be attended by deputies Fabio Porta and Christian Di Sanzo, who will open the proceedings.
