Laura Pausini and Italian 'Pinocchio' are nominated for an Oscar

The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this Monday (15) the nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards. Among them are the singer Laura Pausini and the Italian film “Pinocchio”, by Matteo Garrone.

Pausini is competing in the best original song category with “Io Sí”, a song from the film “Rosa and Momo” (“La Vita Davanti a Sé”), directed by Edoardo Ponti.

About 15 days ago, the singer received the Golden Globe for the same work, which is the result of a collaboration with Diane Warren and Niccolò Agliardi.

“I still don't believe it. Being able to be part of a project like 'The Life Ahead' with Edoardo Ponti and Sophia Loren was for me one of the greatest gifts that life could give me. And now knowing that I was nominated for an Oscar goes beyond any wish or expectation I could have dreamed of,” he wrote in a long message on his Instagram account.

Pausini also highlighted the fact that “a song in Italian” was nominated for the award and stressed that “she is very honored to represent Italy at one of the most important ceremonies in the global entertainment industry”.

Garrone's film was nominated in technical categories, for best costumes and best makeup and hair. The disappointment for the Italians was in the best documentary category, as “Notturno”, by Gianfranco Rosi, was not selected among the five competitors.

The most nominated feature was “Mank”, by David Fincher, with 10 nominations and which is available on Netflix. The film is a drama written by the director's father, Jack Fincher, and is set against the backdrop of the production of another film “Citizen Kane”, released in 1941 and a big Oscar winner.

Subsequently, six films received six nominations each: “Judas and the Black Messiah”, “My Father”, “Minari”, “Nomaland”, “The Chicago 7” and “The Sound of Silence”.

Actor Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous nomination for his performance in “The Supreme Voice of the Blues.”

Another highlight is the fact that, for the first time in Oscar history, two women have been nominated in the best director category: Chloé Zhao, for “Nomadland”, and Emerald Fennell, for “Bela Vingança”, will compete for the statuette against David Fincher , for “Mank”, Thomas Vinterberg, for “Druk – Another Round”, and Lee Isaac Chung, for “Minari”.

The Brazilian “Bacurau”, by Kleber Mendonça, which was pre-nominated, was left out of the list of the five best international films. “Druk – Mais umaround”, from Denmark, “Shaonian de ni”, from Hong Kong, “Collective”, from Romania, “The man who sold his skin”, from Tunisia and “Quo vadis, Aida?”, from Bosnia and Herzegovina are in the running.

The Oscar awards will be held on April 28th, on a date that was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The original date was February 28th.

Furthermore, Academy made some changes to the classification criteria to cover as many films as possible since the United States had cinemas closed for months due to the health crisis.
