President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) received, this Monday 15th, the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, at the Planalto Palace, in Brasília (DF).
Alongside Mattarella, Lula criticized the stance of the European Union (EU) during the negotiations of the — for now — frustrated agreement with Mercosur.
Lula reiterated “the Brazilian government's desire to conclude as soon as possible an agreement with the European Union that is balanced and contributes to the development of both regions”, he stated that progress in negotiations “depends on the Europeans resolving their own internal contradictions”.
For the Brazilian president, measures such as the carbon tax were imposed unilaterally by the EU, making progress in negotiations for the agreement difficult.
The Italian president's visit also helped the two authorities sign agreements between the countries.
One of them involves the reciprocal recognition of driving licenses, while a second must establish memoranda of understanding between Embrapa and the University of Turin.
