More than just stamps: 9 services available at the Italian Post Office

Italian post offices offer services such as issuing passports, paying bills and opening a bank account.

In Italy, post offices (uffici postali, or Poste Italiane) They offer a range of services in addition to sending letters and parcels. With more than 12 units in the country, these places are essential in the daily lives of residents.

In recent years, the post office has begun to provide banking services, issue official documents and even offer telephone plans. Here are nine functions available at an Italian post office.

Banking and social security services

O BancoPosta, the financial arm of the post office, allows you to open accounts, purchase prepaid cards, make investments and even apply for loans. Large branches function like banks.

The best known product is the Postepay Evolution, a rechargeable prepaid card with IBAN that enables operations such as salary receipt, bank transfers and payments, without the need for a traditional current account.

Soggiorno permission request

If you are moving to Italy and do not have Italian citizenship, or if you are the spouse of an Italian citizen but do not have European nationality, you will need to apply for a residence permit.

Citizens from outside the European Union must obtain the residency permit to stay in the country for more than 90 days. The process begins at the post office, where you collect and fill out a specific kit to request the document.

Passport issuance

Since 2024, and with expansion in 2025, several agencies have started receiving passport applications through... Polis project, with delivery of the document at home.

Anagrafe Certificates

Some units provide certificates of residence and family composition, documents issued by the Italian civil registry, in partnership with the Polis project.

Telephony and internet

The post office also offers cell phone, landline and broadband internet plans, both in branches and over the internet, through the PosteMobile service, which operates as a virtual operator and uses the PosteMobile network. Vodafone Italy for mobile telephony and 5G.

From 2026 onwards, the infrastructure will be provided by TIM.

Bill payment

Despite the popularization of digital payments, it is still common to pay bills such as water, electricity and gas through Postal, directly at the agency.

SPID Creation

O SPID is the Italian digital identity. It can be created at post offices and allows access to online public services, such as housing bonuses.

Stamps for collectors

Commemorative stamps and special editions can be purchased at larger agencies or ordered online.

Sending correspondence

In addition to letters and packages, the post office offers electronic services: customers can send documents online, which are printed and posted by the agency itself.
