Sophia Loren wins 'Italian Cinema Oscar' for best actress

Italian Sophia Loren won this Tuesday (11) the David di Donatello award, considered the Oscar of Italian cinema, in the best actress category, for her performance in the film “Rosa and Momo".

Directed by the diva's own son, Edoardo Ponti, the film is a contemporary adaptation of a novel by French writer Ramain Gary.

In the production, Loren, 86 years old, plays Madame Rose, a Holocaust survivor who cares for the children of prostitutes, including Momo, a 12-year-old Senegalese teenager who robbed her, in her modest apartment in Bari, southern Italy.

"The emotion is the same as the first David 60 years ago and even greater”, stated the Italian, thanking the producers and the entire team and “the protagonist with me, a wonderful, magical child, whose name is Ibrahima”.

“I thank my director, Edoardo. Your heart and your sensitivity gave life and soul to this film and my character, which is also why I am truly grateful to my son, a wonderful man,” he added amid applause.

Finally, Loren revealed that she doesn't know if this will be her last film, but she still wants to make more and more beautiful ones. “I can't live without cinema at all".

The 66th edition ceremony was led by Carlo Conti and held simultaneously from two locations: the historic studios of Rai and the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome. At the opening of the awards ceremony, Italian singer Laura Pausini performed the song "Io Sí" from the film "Rosa e Momo" by Loren.

In total, 25 statuettes were awarded in the main categories, one “David” for lifetime achievement, two “David Specials” and three plaques with the name “David 2021” – Recognition of honor.

The award for best film went to “Volevo nascondermi”, a production by Giorgio Diritti about the Italian painter and sculptor Antonio Ligabue (1899-1965). The work also secured the categories for best direction, with Diritti, and best leading actor, with Elio Germano.

Matilda De Angelis, in turn, won the David di Donatello for best supporting actress for her performance in “L'incredibile storia dell'Isola delle Rose”. The award for “best new director” went to Pietro Castellitto for his film “Venezia – I predatori”.

During the event, the 2021 career honor was awarded to Sandra Milo, while Monica Bellucci, one of the main Italian actresses, and Diego Abatantuono, considered one of the most original singers, received special awards.

“I am honored to receive this special recognition for myself, which I share with all winners and nominees in the hope that art in all its forms finds new life. I dedicate the award to my little daughters”, thanked Bellucci. (ANSA)
