The new Italian consul general in Rio de Janeiro, Andreas FerrareseHe arrives at the post with over 30 years of diplomatic experience, two stints as ambassador, and a previous posting in Brazil.
Ferrarese has taken over as head of the consulate, replacing Massimiliano Iacchini, who ended his mission in Rio. The change is part of... round of transfers in Italian diplomacy.
Born in Tübingen, in GermanyBorn on January 17, 1968, Ferrarese graduated in Oriental Languages and Literatures from Ca' Foscari University in Venice in 1992. He entered the Italian diplomatic service in 1994.
Her first experience abroad was in Manila, Philippines, in 1996. Afterwards, she worked at the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv and in the Farnesina Crisis Unit, the structure responsible for emergency situations involving Italians abroad.

In 2008, he was sent to Beirut, Lebanon. Three years later, he arrived in Brazil as first counselor of... Italian Embassy in Brasilia, performing the duties of the number two in the diplomatic representation.
His time in Brazil ended in 2013 when Ferrarese was appointed Italian ambassador to Kosovo. He remained in Pristina until July 2016.
After returning to Rome and also working at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, he achieved the rank of Minister Plenipotentiary in 2017. In February 2020, he received a new leadership assignment: the Italian Embassy in Pakistan.
Ferrarese remained in Islamabad until January 2024. He then returned to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. He currently appears in the Farnesina records with the rank of Minister Plenipotentiary.
A consul who already knows Brazil.
The choice of Rio therefore marks Ferrarese's return to the country after more than a decade.
In addition to his previous experience in Brasilia, the new consul speaks fluent Portuguese. According to a profile released by the Italian diplomatic service when he took up his post in Pakistan, he also speaks English, French, Spanish, Arabic, and Georgian. He is married and has three daughters.
In 2016, he also received the title of Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
The arrival in Rio places a diplomat with far more experience than a first-time head of the consulate at its helm. Ferrarese has already headed two embassies, worked in regions of strong political complexity, and is intimately familiar with the Italian diplomatic and consular structure in Brazil.
