Families living in Sicily, in southern Italy, spend the least on groceries in the country. This data was released by Altroconsumo, which analyzed the average annual expenses of a standard family of four people, across all 20 Italian regions.
According to the survey, the average national supermarket expenditure is 7.250 euros per year. The ten best-placed regions in the ranking are below this average, with variations reaching almost 10% savings in relation to the most expensive ones.
The ten most economical areas for shopping
10. Umbria
Umbria appears in tenth place, with an average annual expenditure of 7.246 Euros per family. Slightly below the national average, the value is lower than those recorded in Basilicata (€7.307), Brands (€7.341) and Liguria (€7.355).

9. Piedmont
In northern Italy, Piedmont ranks ninth. A typical family spends 7.154 euros per year, according to data from Altroconsumo.

8. Calabria
With beautiful coastal landscapes, Calabria also offers relief on the wallet: the average annual cost is 7.130 Euros per family.

7. Friuli Venezia Giulia
In seventh place, Friuli Venezia Giulia records an expense of 7.094 Euros per annum.

6. Campania
Campania, home to destinations like Naples and the Amalfi Coast, comes in sixth. The average annual grocery spending is 7.007 Euros.

5. Veneto
In fifth place, Veneto has an average annual expenditure of 7.003 Euros per family.

4. Lombardy
Despite being one of the wealthiest regions in the country, Lombardy is the fourth most economical in the ranking. The average cost of groceries is 6.983 Euros per year.

3. Tuscany
Tuscany ranks third. Families living in this region spend, on average, 6.973 Euros per annum.

2. Trentino-Alto Adige
In second place is Trentino-Alto Adige, with an average expenditure of 6.949 Euros per annum.

1. Sicily
The cheapest area to shop in Italy is Sicilia, with an average annual cost of 6.836 Euros per family. The value represents 419 euros less than the national average.
