It sounds like old news, but it is. Italianismo published this same article on January 15, 2022 And it's back again now, but with an even bigger problem: renewing or issuing an Italian passport at the consulate in Porto Alegre will only be possible from November 2024 onwards.

On that occasion, the Consulate General of Italy in Porto Alegre said, in a note, that the published article did not correspond to reality and could be interpreted incorrectly".

The body had a vacancy for issuing or renewing the passport Italian only for March 2023. More than a year of waiting, according to a complaint received by Italianismo. Now, the waiting time has jumped to one year and eleven months.

The Italian Consulate General in Porto Alegre informs that the appointment slots available in 2023 represent the "normal" waiting list of numerous people who need to renew or obtain their first Italian passport, but who currently do not need to travel and therefore have no urgent reason for obtaining a new passport., said in note.

Comites says he does not have the strength to charge the consulate

The consulate did not respond.

The local Comites said that it has no “management” over consular services.

“We do not have management over consular services, we work to enhance the value of Italians who live in RS in cultural, social, entrepreneurship, innovation projects, among others!” (Sic), wrote a member of the representative association.

According to the law 205/1985 Among the Comites' obligations is to represent Italians abroad and supervise consular services.

According to the local Comites website, The functions of the body are to “inform the Consulate and the Italian Government about the needs of the community” and to “cooperate with the consular authority taking care of the rights and interests of emigrant citizens”.

Currently the Committees of Italians Abroad in Porto Alegre are commanded by Emir José Parisotto e Stephania Puton, president and vice president, respectively. It's unclear who responded on Instagram.
