Italian beach that separates men and women is once again generating controversy.

On the Trieste coastline, a rare tradition prevents the two sexes from sharing the sand. Tourists are reacting to the rule that has persisted for decades.

A Pedocin beachOn TriesteIn northeastern Italy, a rare rule in Europe is maintained: men and women cannot live together in the same area. The separation has once again become the subject of controversy following criticism from a couple in Milan.

The two described the gender segregation as an "absurd and medieval custom." Their reaction adds to that of other tourists who disapprove of the norm when visiting the city.

At Pedocin, a structure divides the space designated for men and women. The rule prevents the two groups from sharing the same strip of sand and the same stretch of sea.

The separation has been in place for many years and is part of the beach's routine. Even so, some visitors are unaware of the requirement and are surprised when they arrive.

Tourist reviews

The Milanese couple was one of those who expressed discomfort with the division. For them, the rule goes against current customs and harks back to an outdated tradition.

The controversy surrounding Pedocin is nothing new. The beach is located in Trieste, in the far northeast of Italy, near the border with Slovenia, and attracts both regular visitors and tourists passing through the region for the first time.

The rule remains in effect despite complaints. While some of the public find the separation by sex strange, the custom persists as a hallmark of the beach and resurfaces in public debate each season.

This type of rule makes no sense. Let's see: A man and a woman are married, have children together, sleep together, share everything together, and divide their leisure time. One could say this belongs to the medieval era, not the present day. New laws are needed to correct this absurdity of outdated rules.
