Singer will share the stage with Zizi Possi in a special appearance by the Brazilian
Peppino di Capri didn't want to be just another guy wearing a leather jacket and ripped jeans when he gave up his rock career. He even liked the protest that came with rebellion in the 1960s, but the road envisioned by the Italian singer-songwriter was longer. So long, in fact, that he reaches 79 years old with a considerable fan base and the eternal title of the greatest romantic singer in Italian music. With the tour For love, he opens the season of five shows in Brazil this Thursday (14), in Brasília, after passing through the capital in 2017.
He has already come to the country a few times. And he likes it a lot. “Coming to Brazil is always a pleasure, I consider Brazil as my second home, due to the friendliness, kindness and affection with which I am treated here. I thought Brasília was a private city, with incredible architecture, I even took a lot of photos”, he guarantees. “What I can say about my shows in Brazil this year is that my fans will be able to listen and sing the hit songs with me, with the same vibe as the show I did in Brasília in 2017 and whose audience enchanted me in a particular way!”
On stage, Peppino will be joined by Zizi Possi for a few songs in a brand new duet. It's a special appearance by the Brazilian singer who has come closest to Italian music in recent years. In 1997, she recorded the acclaimed... For love. “Zizi Possi’s participation will be a new and enjoyable experience for me. Except for a few TV programs in Italy, I have never shared the stage with another artist, but the singer’s talent and her deep knowledge of Italian music, especially Neapolitan music, made me want to take on this challenge,” says the singer.
Early career
Peppino di Capri's name began to emerge on the international music scene in the 1970s, when he won two editions of the San Remo Festival and one of the Naples Festival. The songs are from that time Champagne e A great love and a big cry, two hits that, to this day, need to be in concert repertoires. But romanticism was not the musician's first option, who was born on the island of Capri and was baptized as Giuseppe. Classical piano lessons as a teenager were soon abandoned when he began playing in Duo Caprese, with drummer Ettore Falconieri, in the 1950s.
There, he decided that he would make a career in rock. Later, with a guitarist and a saxophonist, the duo would become the Capri boys. Pat Boone and Buddy Holly were the inspirations for the boys, who were successful, recorded some albums and opened a Beatles show, but the band disbanded at the end of the 1960s. From then on, it would be Peppino and his rockers, owners of a repertoire anchored in the mix of rock and Neapolitan music. Peppino decided to take a new direction in his career. “I think it worked…”, he jokes. On the most recent album, Una musica infinite, an album designed especially for Christmas, three new songs — Though, Sogno di uma sera d'Estatee I meowed capelli bianchi — became part of the repertoire. In the latter, the Italian reflects on aging, his career and his passion for music. There were, after all, more than 500 songs throughout his career.
