The Porto Alegre City Hall inaugurated, on the afternoon of this Wednesday (21), the monument in commemoration of 150 years of Italian immigration in Rio Grande do SulThe structure is located on the banks of the Guaíba River.
The project was conceived by councilman Jessé Sangalli and had the support of the Italian Consulate General in Porto Alegre. The artwork, created by visual artist Vinicius Vieira, is made of iron and represents a vessel. According to the artist, the shape symbolizes the challenging journey of immigrants who crossed the ocean.
To make the construction possible, R$ 600 was allocated through parliamentary amendments. The initiative arose after discussions between Sangalli and the Italian consul-general. Valerio Caruso, which highlighted the importance of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul having a physical landmark to celebrate the heritage of the Italian community.
During the ceremony, authorities emphasized that the monument serves as a cultural and memorial landmark. The installation is part of the sesquicentennial celebrations of immigration, which saw the peak of migratory flow in the state between 1884 and 1894.
Mayor Sebastião Melo and the Municipal Secretary of Culture, Liliana Cardoso, attended the event. The structure aims to preserve the history of the generations that contributed to the economic and social development of the city. The chosen location allows the monument to integrate with the natural landscape of the Guaíba River.
