O president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, arrived at Immigration Museum, the first official appointment of his visit to São Paulo.

Then, the head of state went to Arsenal da Esperança, a project managed by the Youth Missionary Service (Sermig) in Turin and which welcomes around 1,2 homeless people every day.

Both are located in the former Hospedaria de Imigrantes do Brás, a structure where hundreds of thousands of foreigners – especially Italians – passed between the 19th and 20th centuries.

São Paulo is home to one of the largest Italian-descendant communities in the world, with around 5 million people.
Mattarella has already visited Brasília, where he met with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Porto Alegre, where he visited areas affected by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, and will also travel to Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. (HANDLE)
