Italy in Brazil

Four months after being elected, Fausto Longo could betray his electorate

Longo received 8,9 votes and was elected to the position of the Italian Parliament

Politicians always jumping the fence. Fausto Longo, 65, who was elected to the Italian Parliament in March this year, now promises to abandon ship if he wins a seat in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, in the 2018 elections, for the MDB.

Elected with 8,9 votes, Longo has a guaranteed place as deputy in Italy until 2023, but guarantees that he will leave the Italian parliament if he is elected, despite there being no implications if he wins the election in Brazil.

In an interview with Jornal de Piracicaba, he said that the invitation to contest the election came from the party's Executive — with support from Fiesp where he held several positions — who understood that his experience as a politician in Italy could help bring parliamentary intentions to the country.

“I'm in a political comfort zone in Italy. If I remain in office until 2023, I will retire and I could live in peace, but that is not part of me. It is in Brazil that I, my children and grandchildren live and it is here that we need to fight for better health, housing, employment and dignity conditions,” he said.

But the parliamentarian's premature attitude generated discontent in the Italian community. In the group that brings together the largest number of descendants seeking Italian citizenship, Espaço Livre, many comments disapprove of the politician's decision.

“Honestly, how sad the neglect of the position for which he was elected,” wrote Wallace Bottacin.

Maurilio Ferrari cconsidered this a lack of decorum. “It should at least be revoked. What is this talk that you will resign in Italy if elected in Brazil? Just by being a candidate here I should resign immediately.”

Renata Torresani was short and direct: “What a lack of respect.”

Of Italian descent, Longo held a seat in the Italian Senate from 2013 to 2018, after receiving around 30 votes from voters in South America. Currently, the Brazilian is one of 12 representatives living outside Italy who are part of the Italian parliament .
