A rare one aurora boreal was seen on the night of last Thursday (10) in the mountains of Alto Adige, in the extreme north of Italy, where this phenomenon, typical of the Arctic Circle, is not common.
The dance of green, red and purple lights in the atmosphere was documented by meteorologist Dieter Peterlin, who posted an image of the aurora over Lake Caldaro, outside Bolzano, on Facebook, and by photographer Gianvito Coco, who immortalized the spectacle in the Dolomites.
After a wave of bad weather, the sky was clear on Thursday night, which allowed the phenomenon to be seen in several locations in Alto Adige.
Generally, the aurora is restricted to areas close to the Earth's polar zones (at the south pole, aurora australis; at the north pole, aurora borealis), where the interaction between the planet's magnetic field and the electrically charged particles emitted by the solar winds is more intense, creating a spectacle of luminous shapes in the sky.

However, a strong geomagnetic storm caused the phenomenon to be seen at lower latitudes, such as in Alto Adige.
